This is just how I see it, and I could be wrong [I hope not], but with S@H
on the way [retail arm of LD (?)] We'll be able to get any set that they • can
get in the US from S@H. This will mean that it will be EASY to get sets
cheap in Australia, even allowing for postage. Therefore for LA to remain
relevant/in business, the shelf price of lego in Australia will have to • drop
considerably...End result cheaper sets for Aus, and hopefully bigger sales
for LA :)

Let me offer a depressing counter-argument.

Assumption. Lego Australia has the exclusive rights to distribute Lego in
this country.

Therefore, Lego S@H in Australia and/or Lego Direct in Australia will NOT
bypass Lego Australia but will provide us with a phone/WWW sales interface
into Lego Australia. The prices of goods bought directly through Lego
Australia in this manner will cost whatever the Australian RRP is, because
the big retailers would scream if Lego Australia was significantly
undercutting them through direct phone/WWW sales.

In support of this argument ...

Lego S@H and Lego Direct in the USA won't ship to other countries
(supporting my belief about Lego Australia's exclusive rights to local
distribution). Similarly, WWW orders placed with Lego Dacta in the USA are
sent back to you with the contact details of the Australian Lego Dacta
distributors; Lego Dacta USA will not sell directly into Australia.

Judging from the chatter on lugnet, USA retail outlets are usually cheaper
or equivalent prices than Lego S@H, suggesting Lego S@H in the USA does not
undercut the local retailers.

So, sorry to be a wet blanket, but I don't think Lego S@H and Lego Direct in
Australia will be resulting in reduced prices. I think our only hope of
reducing prices in Australia is a growing market for Lego in this country,
leading to economies of scale and hopelessly overstocked shops having
clearance sales :-)

(...) What about the Lego World Shop structure? I didn't buy anything from them but I was under the impression that they shipped from overseas bypassing LA (I may well be wrong), we could definitely buy from them though. Their site has an under (...) (24 years ago, 2-Aug-00, to lugnet.loc.au, lugnet.org.au)
