2003 Commemorative Stamp Program Celebrates 'Year of Firsts'

CARLSBAD, Calif., Oct. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- The 100th anniversary of the first
controlled, powered airplane flight, the first African-American U.S. Supreme
Court Justice and the first national wildlife refuge are among the historic
subjects that will be honored on new commemorative stamps in 2003, the U.S.
Postal Service announced today.

"The U.S. commemorative stamp program is a window into our nation's soul,
and it gives all Americans an opportunity to share in the pioneering spirit
and great pride that is a hallmark of our country," said Catherine Caggiano,
executive director of Stamp Services for the Postal Service, who unveiled
the 2003 stamp designs at LEGOLAND California Theme Park.

Joining Caggiano at the unveiling ceremony were Bill Haviluk, president and
general manager of LEGOLAND California; John Platt, district manager for the
Postal Service's San Diego District; and Carl T. Herrman, one of several art
directors responsible for the development of the artwork for the 2003 stamp
designs.

USPS Unveils 2003 Stamp Program at LEGOLAND® California

The United States Postal Service will unveil its 2003 Stamp Program, "A
Nation of Firsts," on October 10, 2002 in California.

The USPS will unveil its 2003 Stamp Program at a special ceremony at
LEGOLAND® California, in Carlsbad, on October 10th at 10:15 a.m. Area
schoolchildren have been invited to join in the fun and help the Postal
Service unveil six (6) of the 2003 stamp images, which will be created
entirely out of LEGO bricks and on display in the LEGOLAND Miniland USA
section of the 128-acre theme park.

The LEGO bricks used for the images will be "2x4" and "1x1". Each finished
image will measure "30x44".

The images that will be created out of LEGO bricks will be: Lunar New Year,
First In Flight, Southeastern Lighthouses, Reptiles and Amphibians, Old
Glory Prestige Book and Holiday Music Makers.

The remaining 2003 stamp images will be unveiled using traditional color
print enlargements.

Collectible LEGOLAND pictorial cancellation will be available all day near
The Big Shop at no charge to park guests, while sheets of stamps and
postcards also will be on sale. The exact cancellation will be available at
the Carlsbad Post Office for 30 days after the event.

Did I miss something? What's the connection with stamps and Lego? Is there
going to be a postage stamp w/Lego on it? Or are they just doing a display of
the new stamps out of Lego because it'll look cool? Or both?
