See this comparison: (URL) older brick on the left has holes in the bottom studs, but more importantly, the flanges on studs 2 & 4 don't go all the way to the (...) In my opinion, there are two or more moulds, each with a little difference, and they change them every now and then. (For cleaning and (...) The "new" brick looks to be just molded in an older mold, as they seems to vary from set to set for me, sometimes I get the ones with the holes in the (...) (20 years ago, 3-Apr-04, to lugnet.lego.direct, lugnet.general)

It got my attention since I never saw two versions of the same piece in the same Lego set. Maybe they just intorduced a new mold, and also (...) Snip I believe that the one on the left is a newer mold (entailing a slight saving in material used) and the one on the right matches my bricks dating back to the mid '70s, so it's at least that old. I don't know when they introduced the new (...) (20 years ago, 6-Apr-04, to lugnet.lego.direct, lugnet.general)
