Unfortunately, I think
the Gundam License is owned by a separate company, so I don't think that
will happen any time soon, although that would be cool.

The listed copyright owners of the core Gundam series are Sotsu Agency and
Sunrise.  Bandai is the only company that I can think of that is currently
producing Gundam related merchandise.  There is a reason for this though,
Sunrise is a subsidiary of Bandai.  Gundam, is their cash cow property which
is why you don't see anyone else making Gundam merchandise.

It's more likely that Bandai would start producing construction toys
themselves rather than license out to Lego so don't hold your breath. There
is a much better chance with other properties such as the aforementioned
Xenogears. The problem with Xenogears it most likely would not command the
sales that something like Gundam could.  Cartoons sell toys.  With G1
Transformers and Robotech making a comeback, these maybe the best bets.

In the construction toy realm, Knex is the only company I can think of that
has an actual mecha based license through the Mechwarrior property. Both
Megablocks and Lego produce their own designs . . . um . . . poorly.

There is also one Japanese toy company, Kawada, that produces construction
toys of mecha but nothing that is licensed.  The line is called Dia-droids
or Dia-blocks.  Supposedly there are some cool joint pieces so I'm gonna
pick some up next time I'm in Japan.

(...) Hmm...I've seen some of the model kits by Bandai, and those are pretty cool, but I haven't been holding my breath for the gundam lego, because I know that's never going to happen. It would be cool, but until then, I guess we'll have to do (...) (22 years ago, 12-Aug-02, to lugnet.build.mecha, lugnet.lego.direct)

(...) Aaah, but what about the Zoids Blox series?? I just picked up two sets while at the San Diego Comic Con and interestingly enough the holes in the blocks/blox fits and axle or pin perfectly. Hmmmm.... (22 years ago, 12-Aug-02, to lugnet.build.mecha, lugnet.lego.direct)

(...) Oh, definitely. It would be great to see some lego models, particularly of the Gundam Wing or Transformers line. I think that would be definitely innovative, and contribute to some great sales. Unfortunately, I think the Gundam License is (...) (22 years ago, 11-Aug-02, to lugnet.build.mecha, lugnet.lego.direct)
