If the sales for this division continue to be strong, I suspect this
artificial limit of how many sets they can release could be raised or
eliminated.

That's the point.  The limit is not in any way "artificial", but very
*real*-- Brad said so himself.  They can only put out so many
different sets at any given time, and even of those being offered,
some are *already* out of production-- it's just that we as consumers
aren't aware of it.

As I read Allan's comment (and as I interpreted the "so many different
sets in production" line above), the situation is:
TLC currently has many, many sets in production[1].
Lego Direct is allotted a small portion of TLC's production
capacity. This is ``artificial'' in the sense that it does not directly
depend upon TLC's production capacity, but only on how someone in Billund
has decided to divvy that capacity up among TLC's various divisions and
product lines.
If Lego Direct shows a good rate of return for the sets for which
it is directly responsible, Billund may decide to let LD use a greater
portion of TLC's production capacity, allowing LD to release a greater
number of sets (or produce more copies of the sets it produces, of
course.)

Thus, the limit is real to LD, in that LD cannot exceed it, but it should
be subject to future review and revision by TLC.

At least that's what makes sense to me. . .

[1] More or less; they might not actually be being made physically at any
given point, but are still in the computers to be made if and when
inventories drop, scheduled for another run later this year, etc.  The
Lugnet Guide currently lists 73 2002 sets, all of which can probably be
said to be ``in production'', and it's only February; presubably some of
the 283 sets from 2001 are still in production as well.

(...) ??? I think LD couldn't care less about what goes on at ebay. (...) Well, how about this scenario: what would you rather have, this set run over 60,000 sets, or 3 sets of the same car in alternate road color schemes. As far as "limited (...) (23 years ago, 21-Feb-02, to lugnet.lego.direct)
