(...) Separate the torso from the legs of a minfig, and look into the underside of the torso piece. The tabs are bits of plastic that stick out from the sides and match up with the studs on the legs. (...) In 1986? No way. The tabs were around before 1983 (or started that year), as I had never seen the tabless torsos until I picked up a used copy of 6390 Main Street.
