Incredible LEGO Olympic Stadium drawing crowds in London

From STLToday.com
July 28, 2012

LONDON — The crowd gathered around the glass box, snapping photos while pointing and smiling. It was the LEGO block section of John Lewis Stratford, the official store for the 2012 London Games; so what was on display?

That would be 100,000 LEGO transformed into Olympic Stadium:

A team of four people worked two months to create the faux-stadium, located steps away from the official London Olympics store in the Westfield Shopping Centre. That’s approximately 450 hours of labor to get every detail right — front and back.

The design takes elements from the Olympic Stadium where the Opening Ceremony was held. It’s from the mind of Warren Elsmore, a nationally famous artist who has previously created other London landmarks from LEGO, including St. Pancras train station.

Here’s a 360-degree video look at the model: YouTube.com

The LEGO stadium weighs around 100 kg, or 220 pounds. It’s drawing crowds four rows deep during the early days of the Summer Games — including many locals, who obviously love the special consideration given to the Team Great Britain athletes:

Those LEGO figures (Collectible Minifigure) were selling briskly at the official LEGO store, located elsewhere in Westfield Shopping Centre near the Olympic Village.
