The 50x50 was available from the late 1960's until probably the middle 1970's (not
sure about the exact dates). I think that the reason they switched to the 48x48 was
due to the fact that 4 of the 48x48 are the same size as 9 of the 32x32 road plates.
It's as simple as algebra, 48 x 2 = 32 x 3 . Whereas 50 and 32 do not factor out
very easily (a pretty big number).
Like the 48x48 baseplates today, the 50x50 baseplates came in no particular sets, but
were available as an individual item. I have a 1970 Samsonite Dealer Catalog that
shows a metal display stand (for sitting on a counter) for holding LEGO service packs
and 10x20 thick baseplates. The display stand also holds the large 50x50 baseplates.
I honestly doubt of the existence of a 52x52 baseplate, but I could be wrong. The
early days of TLG are always full of surprises.
In addition, in 1970-71 Samsonite LEGO also made a 50x50 green baseplate with a
curved roadway (in grey but with no road markings). This was the very first (but
short lived) attempt at a baseplate roadway.
Actually the first LEGO roadway started in the early days of LEGO (1955). That was
the old Town Plan road boards (made of cardboard or plastic), made from 1955-68 in
Europe in 2 styles (1955-59 and 1960-68 as #200 or #200A), and from 1961-64 in the
USA/Canada in one style (#246).
