Follow-ups sent to lugnet.org
This is my third posting as a follow-up to NELUG's first experiance presenting
in public at the MIT Mindfest.
This post covers signs and information that would be nice to have when
presenting in public.
The following is some information that would be nice to have available. Some
of this we had and some we did not.
1. Handouts are nice. We had 3 and we ended giving out alot more copies of
each then I think we expected. The first one was a handout about NELUG. This
handout simply gave a quick synopsis of our "charter" and contact information.
The second was a listing of all the other Regional LEGO groups including User
Groups and Train Clubs with short descriptions of each and URL's. The third
was a simple buisness card (Thanks to Todd). This card had the NELUG logo on
one side with our URL and the LUGNET logo on the other side with that URL. The
cards were a little late in arriving at our table but once they got there they
were very popular.
2. Statistics on models. We were fairly lacking here and could have used some
more information although I am sure Dave and Shaun don't want to take apart
their AT-AT's just to count bricks. We were ask often about how many bricks
were in each model. About the only thing I could figure out was that the base
had over 3100 bricks in it because I had purchased 50 gray service packs with
62 parts each and that just about all were built into the base. We also knew
that there were about 100 bricks in each foot of at least Shaun's AT-AT.
3. People also wanted to know how much a LEGO set of one of the AT-AT's would
go for. For this we said to average about 10 cents a brick. Then using the
100 brick per foot number we said that it would cost $40 just for the feet.
Then making some assumptions we said probably $600 - $700 per model
conservatively speeking and that Shaun and Dave would have had to spend alot
more then that to collect all the parts to build them.
4. Some other information was stuff like membership numbers. I had all of this
and was able to tell people we had 32 members and that was in 3 months of
existance (now 36 as of last night). Plus I made sure to mention that at the
moment we are all Adults in the group (This got a very wide range of looks from
"excelent how to I join" to "I think you all need to get a life").
There were also some signs that we needed. Some of these I made after Friday
night. Many of these needed to be much bigger than they were.
Signs like...
1. "Do Not Touch Models Please" I have already said alot about this one. The
only thing I would add is to always include the "Please". Politeness is
important.
2. "100% Personal Collections" Many people thought we were sponsored by LEGO
because that is the only way they could fathom us having so many bricks. Most
people could not believe that we didn't at least have a deal with LEGO for
purchasing bricks. This sign also helped with the respect factor.
3. "Not Sponsored or Endorsed by LEGO" This one would have been nice but we
didn't have one.
4. It would also be nice if we were able to get a nice big banner with the
NELUG Logo on it to hang from the table. We did have a paper one thanks to
Todd that was about 8 1/2' x 22'. This was great but I think even bigger (alot
bigger) and on canvas would have been nice. I may look into having a nice one
made up for us in the future.
