Most probably its purpose is adding elasticity to the brick, so crack
initiation and loosing the connection ability of the brick as a result,
could be delayed. They also went the same way in some other pieces. Look at

You can easily see the same kind of design change in friction pegs, 1/2
bushings and toggle joints, when you compare their both new and old
versions. From my experience, I can easily say that old type of half
bushings and toggle joints were real headaches, since after a very short
mission life, they became cracked or broken, without any apparent cause. The
old friction pegs were not breaking, but their problem was taking them
apart, which caused by again over rigidity of its body.
