I was wandering through the Lego aisle of my local TRU and came across two
new 1999 sets.  They are the new Indy car (8445) and the Apache-type
helicopter (8444).  I almost missed them because the boxes are no longer the
dark blue color that we've become accustomed to and the Technic logo has
changed.  The new boxes are light grey with a large photograph of the set on
the front and a large image of stylized alternate models ("inspiration
drawings") on the back.  The look is identical to that seen on the
Cybermaster set (8482).  The new look is carried over into the instructions
with photgraphs of the models in the futuristic environments we've seen in
the recent Technic CD-ROMs.  Here are some plusses and minuses:

Pros:

1) I like the overall look of the new manual and box.

2) The photos in the manual are placed at strategic locations to serve as
"checkpoints" during model building.

3) There are now at least two alternate models in the manuals for these
sets.  The alternate models are usually basic ideas which can be "fleshed
out" by the builder.

4)  The boxes showing the parts needed for each step have changed (see Con
#1).  On the upside, the beams now have a number beside them stating their
length just like the axles have had all along.  No more counting studs!  Why
wasn't this done years ago? :)

5)  There are now color-coded tabs at the bottom corner of each page of the
instructions for each of the different models.

Cons:

1)  The little boxes that show the parts needed for each step now look like
a "window" from the MacOS complete with a title bar and tiny
maximize/minimize buttons.  I guess it goes along with the futuristic look
of the manual but I can't help but think it will look REALLY silly years
from now.

2)  There was an error in the manual for 8444 (but a correction sheet was
included).

3)  The manual for 8444 is too big for the box and has to be bent to fit
under the parts tray.

Anyone have any thoughts about the new design?  Does the new Supercar 8448
have the new design box?  Interestingly, most of the other 1999 sets
(including all three "modular" sets) have the old style box/instructions.

Yes, the new 8448 is just the same. I just finished building it about 10 minutes ago. There are two instruction books. One just to finish the running hardware, and a second to start upper body and non-moving parts. The second manual is thick as a (...) (25 years ago, 8-Aug-99, to lugnet.general)
