Hey all,

My wife got me this set for my birthday, and what an awesome dark and light blue
parts pack it is!  Oh, and it also makes a pretty amazing Volkswagen!  ;-)

During the building process, I discovered two very surprising things:

1.  The 1x1 plates w/clip in light blue were an earlier mold (4085b) where the
clips were slightly narrower.  I don't believe that light blue was around when
this mold was retired so I'm at a loss to explain their presence here.

2.  Three dark bley 1x6 bricks were distinctly darker than the rest.  At first I
thought that they might be leftover "retired" colors, but I checked and they
were not.

I can understand the color variance as TLG likely still working out the bugs in
the outsourcing and production of their bricks, but the older parts mold boggles
me.

Finally, those of you who purchase this set be aware that it is virtually
impossible to tell the difference between gray 1x1 round plates and metallic
silver 1x1 round plates from the instruction pictures.  I was making the front
and rear bumpers when I realized that the metallic silver ones were supposed to
be used in the engine.

I also had quite a few parts left over, more than just the spares we've come to
expect, so I'd highly recommend pulling all the parts for each step.  I usually
don't do this because the build is not complex enough for me to miss things, but
they got me this time!

(...) I've come across this problem several times before. Also it's quite frustrating to try to follow instructions including black several shades of grey and blue, like in the Titan XP (4508). Often the only way to know which is which is by (...) (15 years ago, 2-Aug-09, to lugnet.general)
