Someone on Bricklink posted a question about the Canadian wave (embossed) and
straight (stickered) flags.

So I thought I would repost it here.

The Canadian is the rarest of the straight and wavy country flags.

So far as I can tell the straight (stickered) flag was only sold in the #575
Coast Guard Station Set (the USA version had the USA flag). It is possible that
it may have been sold in Canadian versions of the #939 Flags/Roadsigns/Trees
parts pack, but that has not been confirmed.

The Canadian wave flag (with a ridged pole) was probably found in the #442
Decorator Set of 1969-73. This obscure Canada only set had fences & gates, trees
& bushes, flags, and a TV antenna.

It is kind of strange how Canada, Ireland and Australia were sort of ignored
when it came to LEGO flags. When wave flags were first introduced in 1957, there
were only 14 continental European country flags, the USA flag, and the LEGO
flag. The first Australian flag was introduced in 1966 in the British/Australian
#442A and #442B flags spare parts packs. The first Canadian flag was in the 1969
#442 Decorator Set, and the first Irish flag was (likely) in the British version
of the #939 Flags, Roadsigns, Trees parts pack.

Too bad that there were no Canadian flags in the first Canadian Samsonite LEGO
#242 Flags spare parts packs of 1962. They would have been the old Canada
Dominion flags (similar to the Australian flag with the Union Jack in the
corner, but the background color was red instead of blue). The new Maple Leaf
flag came online sometime around or before the Canada Centennial of 1967. An old
Dominion flag would have been a nice additional variation of the LEGO flags.

So from 1962 (when the first LEGO was sold in Canada) until 1969, all Canadian
children who got a flag spare parts pack would have gotten 7 flags (likely one
would always be the LEGO flag), all of other countries!  :-(

Cheers,
Gary Istok

P.S. For those of you who have my LEGO CD, there's info on these flags in
Chapters 27 - LEGO Spare Parts Packs (1966-79) and Chapter 32 - LEGO Town
Accessories (1955-87).
