I just got back from 6 days of canoeing down the Missouri River in
central Montana, following some of the trail of Lewis and Clark,
explorers who, exactly two hundred years ago (1806), completed their
historic trek from St Louis to the Pacific Ocean up the Missouri, across
the Rockies, down the Columbia, and then back. Their trip started in
1804 and was finished in 1806. Approximately 30 people, including York
the slave, Sacajawea the teenage Indian guide, and her newborn son
Jean-Baptiste, made up the Corps of Discovery. Lewis' and Clark's
expedition is a hallmark of American frontier history. My trip, with
two guides and my three kids, took six days and 108 miles, all downstream!
But I thought about my Lego hobby on the trip and concluded that a
collection of "Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Commemorative" sets would
have been a really cool thing for TLC. Some sets that come to mind:
* Lewis and Clark winter at the Mandan village
* The Keelboat
* The adventure with the Grizzley bear
* "Ocean in view! O the joy!"
* Sacajawea meets her long-lost brother ensuring horses for the Corps
* Rapids on the Columbia
* Fort Clapstop
* Arrival in St Louis
* and many more!
Lots of blue baseplates, buffaloes, canoes, Indian teepees, explorer
and Indian minifigs.
Oh well, just some thoughts,
Rafe
