Bail up to $1 million in Lego theft case
The case: William A. Swanberg, 40, of Reno, Nev., is charged with three counts
of first-degree theft and one count of attempted first-degree theft on
accusations of stealing Lego toys from three Washington County Target stores.
Employees of the store on Southwest Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway tackled Swanberg
Nov. 17 and held him for police after realizing he was the subject of a security
alert for allegedly scamming Target stores in five Western states. Detectives
said Swanberg covered the stickers on expensive toy building sets with bar codes
that indicated lower prices, paying about 20 cents on the dollar to buy the
toys. Investigators say he then sold the toys online for more. Target officials
have estimated their loss at about $200,000 in five states.
Update: Washington County Circuit Judge Timothy Alexander raised Swanberg's bail
on Monday from $250,000 to $1 million. Senior Deputy District Attorney Jeff
Lesowski argued that Swanberg is a flight risk because he had no ties to Oregon
and has enough money to leave after making nearly $600,000 in Lego sales on
brinklink.com and an unknown amount on 1,700 Lego sales on eBay. Charles
Wiseman, private defense attorney, asked that bail be lowered to $40,000 because
the original amount was too high for someone charged with property crimes.
What's next: A pretrial conference is set for 1:30 p.m. Monday (12/12) in
Washington County Circuit Court.
