The USA appears to have been used as a test ground for new products... such as
Jumbo/Pre-School bricks.  These Jumbo bricks were not sold elsewhere.  Even
though they were sold in the USA until 1972, the real Duplo brick was introduced
in continental Europe in 1969.  By 1975 the real Duplo brick was sold
everywhere.  And as we know, the real Duplo bricks are compatible with all Lego
bricks, unlike the Jumbo bricks.

Even though Duplo was sold in the USA from 1973 onward, it was still called
"Pre-School" until 1979.  In the 1979 USA catalog they announce a new name for
the pre-school bricks.... Duplo.  The Duplo name however was used elsewhere
since the beginning of production in 1969.

Gary,

There is a slight chance that these jumbo bricks made it into the Europe market
for a short time.  There is also a chance these are just prototypes and were
never sold.

The 501 shown here (in the LEGO Billund archive) is in a Europe style box.  The
black and white "5 people" logo was never used in the USA.  This box may have
been a prototype since the word "system" has been taped over in the logo.

Note that these are shrinkwrapped and seem to be the production version.

Here is the 503 in a Europe style box:

I have speculated before that this may be an example where Samsonite bricks were
EXPORTED to Europe.

The LUGNET set entries should not be under the Samsonite category.  501 and 503
were not Samsonite USA sets.

Eric

OK, to add to the confusion is the fact that NO catalogs show the #501, #502 or
#503 sets.  Jan K.'s Billund Vault pictures (which I hadn't seen) sorta takes
some of that mystery away.

Duplo sales started in 1969 in Europe.  These sets would have to have predated
the Duplo sets.  One reason is the set number.

These sets are either prototype only sets, or (as TLG has done before) these
were test sets that were released in a limited geographic area, perhaps only
Denmark?  The reason that they date before 1969 is because of the numbering
system.  These sets:

Set     Set                             Year           Element

#503    Pre-School Large Set            1967-68          16

And the REAL Duplo sets that came out in 1969 had numbers:

The #501-#503 sets were discontinued (or never produced in mass) before the
#510-#521 early Duplo sets were produced starting in 1969.  The sets sold in USA
still said "Pre-School" on the box, even though they were no longer the old
style bricks sold in USA from 1964-72.

Also, I believe that all molds for all Lego/Pre-School/Duplo elements originated
from Billund.

(...) Gary, One other item - the 501 must date from after late 1966/1967. See the 042 in the USA 1967 dealer catalog. Same box art, etc... (URL) (19 years ago, 20-Nov-05, to lugnet.general)
