Its starting to look like theres no definitive listing, so time to get
creative. Rather than have a very detailed 500-entry list that nobody would
use, well probably end up coming up with a 30-50 entry list, which should be
plenty granular for this project.
Thanks for the recommendations, everyone. If anyone has any other resources,
please LMK.

When I go to news.lugnet.com, I see exactly such a list, right under the
dividing line at the top. Adventurers, Aquazone, Basic, Belville, all the way
up to Znap. I figure, these categories have been used here for a few years and
have worked well enough (or have been revised where they werent working,
right?). Might as well use them at least as a starting point.
I dont think its important to match official LEGO themes, even where such
exist. Whats important here is to have a good fit for the areas of interest
that people have. If (for example) youre really interested in only one subset
of Space stuff but no other Space stuff, well -- set the theme to Space and do a
search. No big whup. If it really offends you, try to find a few dozen others
who feel the same way, and lobby for a change to the list next year. But
initially, we should err on the side of fewer choices rather than too many.
One other idea, though... we could consider separating the aspect of what sort
of pieces did you build with from what sort of genre is it in. Something
like this:
Medium: System - Brick, System - Technic, Duplo, Quatro, Znap
Genre: Castle, Robotics, Sculpture, Space, Town/Train, Vehicles, (etc.)
So, if I really want to find out how people are using their Duplo, I can search
for that regardless of theme. Or I could look only for Duplo sculptures. It
seems to me that some of the themes discussed elsewhere are genres, and some
of them are media, which is causing some of the confusion. Separating them
might help.
Best,
Joe
