EBAY recently had some German seller selling a lot of 50's and 60's Lego parts
and spare parts boxes.

Here is a nice picture (go to the larger picture below) of Lego spare parts
boxes from 1955-59.

The 2 boxes in the bottom row are from 1955-56.
The 6 boxes in the top row are from 1957.
The 4 (leftmost) boxes in the middle row are from 1958.
The 2 (rightmost) boxes in the middle row are from 1959.

Gary,
Thanks for the pictures and information. There is an interesting variety to
these boxes:

OK Clark, Here we go.....
I have a few questions:
1) Most of the boxes are colored sleeves that surround a white or black box with
mono-colored graphics. But I've seen some boxes that are full color with flaps -
no tray. Any idea where/when these come from?
Yes, the white/off white inner boxes are of parts packs from 1955-59.  The black
inner boxes are 1960-62.  The full color with flap and no inner box (tray) are
from 1963-65.  The monochromatic blue boxes are from 1966-71.

2) What is the difference between the 58 & 59 boxes? Are you just recognizing
the picture? I can't see the normal changes in the logo between those two boxes.
Just the picture.  The 1958 picture matches all the basic sets from 1958-59.

3) Do you know if there are UK specific box pictures? I've seen several sleeves
with Made in Great Britain printed on them, but don't know if those are UK only
or not. I've also seen that text stamped on Continental boxes.

From 1963 onward the parts packs from Britain matched those of continental
Europe, but had the "Made in Great Britain" writing.  From 1960 (the year Lego
came to Britain) until 1963, all parts packs were imported from continental
Europe and there was no way to tell them apart.

4) Are the 1000 series numbers the earlier sets from Denmark? If so, when did
the 1000 series packs cease production?

The 12xx parts packs were for Denmark, Sweden and Norway.  They were produced
from 1955-57.  All parts packs for the rest of continental Europe were in the
2xx range. All parts packs from 1955-57 had the words "LEGO Bricks" in the local
language, and "system in play" in the local language on the box.  After 1957,
all Lego boxes had only "LEGO System" (and no more "system in play").
If you saw "system i leg" and "Lego Mursten", it was Danish.
If you saw "system i lek" and "Lego Mursten", it was Swedish.
If you saw "system im spiel" and "Lego Bausteine", it was German or Austrian.
For countries like Belgium or Switzerland, there were 2 languages on the box.
Etc.

Thanks,
Clark

Oh, and those plastic boxes with the adults on the box are the Architectural
series of parts packs from 1963-65.  They were only for #518, #519, #520 and
#521 (plates, 2x4, 2x3, 2x2 and 1x2 & 1x1 respectivle).  These same parts packs
were made in the colorful cardboard box style as well (#518-521) and had a Swiss
Chalet on the box top.

P.S. The different box top styles started in 1959, and lasted until 1965.  If
you were to collect every one of these parts packs in every different box top
style, they would number into the thousands!!
