The metamorphosis of the LEGO logo always makes for an interesting discussion.
The big logo change, however, happened back in 1973. If memory serves me
correctly, this had something to do with TLG taking over LEGO in the USA from
Samsonite. This was the beginning of the Enfield Connecticut regional
headquarters. Ironically, Samsonite continued to handle LEGO in Canada until TLG
took over in circa 1986.
The 1973 logo change was when the word LEGO was changed from italicized blocky
script to italicized block letters. The old logo had the loop in the letter "O",
and the white letters were outlined in black with a red background. The new logo
had a round "O", and the white letters were outlined first in black, then in
yellow, then followed by the red background.
