I was browsing thru PEERON today, and I was checking out the different 1x6 and
1x8 bricks with names ("named beams") many of them from the 1957-65 era.  And I
noticed that they didn't have those 1x6 and 1x8 named beams unique to the USA
(Samsonite).

Back then the major source of these named beams was Lego spare parts pack #226
(1957-65).  When they first came out in 1957, there were 8 named beams in the
continental European version of #226.  That number changed to 7 named beams from
1958-65.  The British version of #226 also had 7 named beams, while the
USA/Canada Samsonite version of #226 had 10 named beams.

As a child in the early 1960's I purchased a #226 USA parts pack.  The 10 named
beams (which I still have) are:

1x6:  CAFE, HOTEL, HOTEL, STORE, STORE, STORE.
1x8:  GROCERY, ESSO SERVICE, GARAGE, THEATER.

The GROCERY and STORE named beams are not available in Europe.  These should be
added to the Peeron Database (date 1961).

A few years back I answered a LUGNET question on named beams. Check under
LUGNET.GENERAL my "HISTORY OF LEGO" series section on printed bricks for some in
depth info on early named beams.

In my upcoming CD, I give the breakdown of the named beams for many countries
(in their own version of parts pack #226) such as: Germany, Britain, Italy,
Netherlands, Denmark, Norway and USA.

There will be a chapter in my CD titled "Lego Signs, Number/Letter Bricks,
Stickers & Painted Elements".

(...) And speaking of rare 1x6 and 1x8 beams with names, I just saw a German Bricklink seller selling a 1x6 "ANNO 1762" named beam from the #309 Church set of 1958-62, for $36.75! This particular named beam is not part of the #226 named beam parts (...) (20 years ago, 27-Aug-04, to lugnet.general)
