In another one of my 'bored at work days' I wonder some of the strangest of
things, today’s thoughts are:

In one way or another we all enjoy the wonders of LEGO from the past and present
(ok, maybe not so highly of present, but still, in general)... But how did it
all start for us?  Here is mine:

I was 3, and it's all my Grandparents fault! (Sadly they are no longer here
today)... We were at Brisbane airport?(I think they were seeing us off? maybe to
Sydney?) and in the boot of their car was a large gift (almost as big as me...)
I can't remember which set it was and I still have some of the parts for it
today but it was only around 12 years ago that we threw they paperwork and box
away, one of those large sets with the coloured barcode type stripes and foam
insert tray... funny looking people and old style wheels... one day I will try
to locate it.  But it would have been from around 1978 or earlier (since I am 29
now). So that was my first set, can't remember if they bought me anymore, I
think I was quite satisfied with that one!

But it definitely kept me interested and my little brother (once he came into
the world) used it not just for building, but also role playing.  Around a
similar age I spent Christmas at a cousins place and they had lots of LEGO,
trees and bricks etc and that year I got more LEGO (just can't remember which
set though, don't think it was very big at all)...

Later in life we went to a few LEGO shows that were more frequent than they are
today (both in New Zealand and Australia).  We lived up north in QLD and had a
few friends who we loved to visit (my little brother and I, ok, they were his
friends, but I loved their LEGO collection ;))... they had HEAPS and HEAPS of
LEGO! we also visited the library in our town since Mum could leave us there for
activity time and go shopping, we would play and build LEGO in the LEGO area...
that was cool, dunno if we nicked any parts though ;) (As kids sometimes do...
right?).  There was also a shop near some place called Coles New World and they
stocked a lot of the old Castle LEGO and LEGOLAND sets, we used to bug and bug
Mum to get them for us, I think they were around $1.50+ at the time...  We got
LEGO for our birthdays and Christmas, I preferred that to Barbie etc... When we
went on shopping trips with Mum, we'd spend our money on LEGO and I'd convince
my brother to spend his on it too...

When kids asked me what to get him for his birthday, I'd say LEGO! lol... but he
wanted Transformers and He-Man etc, lol... When we were getting older, I bought
him a town set only cause I got a free watch with it, I don't even think he
liked LEGO that much (well as much as I did) around that time and would have
preferred typical boys toys... there was a time when asking Mum for LEGO became
non-existent as the answer was "you're too old" and "you have enough" or "I am
sick of standing on it" etc.  As an older teen I used to look at the LEGO
sections and drool and dream, still wishing I could build them and buy them or
convince Mum to get them for Christmas etc... But no :(  I think the last set
she bought was when we were going to New Zealand, through the duty free shop
back in 1986, my brother got some classic space set (now worth heaps) and I got
the Guarded Inn... she wanted me to get the Horse Stable set cause she thought
it was more appropriate for a girl. But my argument was there is a girl in the
set! ;) So clever I got that set ;)

I used to have fun thinking of what they could build, make and create and wish I
was working for LEGO. Those were the days... Even though I had many years
without the LEGO in buying and receiving, it was still a favourite of mine and
one that I knew would stick with me, so it's was fun having children and using
them as the excuse to buy it ;) - Thankfully my Brother is happy to buy it for
me as a present these days :D I've given up on my Mum ;) and whenever my Mum
complains about how much I have, I tell her... blame Grandma... she started it
;)

Thanks!

Mel :)

Thanks for reminding me of why I like these silly plastic bricks! It brought back some fond memories that tend to get forgotten when reading some of the stuff that goes on around here. James Wilson, Dallas, TX (20 years ago, 24-Aug-04, to lugnet.fun, lugnet.general)
