Eric,
The 005 set you are talking about probably came out around 1967 or so. The 001,
002, 003, and 004 sets first came out in 1965. (I have the Samsonite catalogs
for 1961, 1963, 1965, 1966, 1968 and the dealer catalog for 1970.) The 005 set
is not listed in any of these catalogs (of course there is a 536 Architectural
set that is also not listed in any Samsonite catalog). The 1967 date is probably
correct. 1967 was the year that the 002 and 003 sets were discontinued.
After 1970 Samsonite must have seen the handwriting on the wall, so to speak,
since the number of sets went from dozens down to just 7. TLG was going to get
the Lego license back from Samsonite in 1972, so 1971 and 1972 were very lean
years for Samsonite Lego. But this is for the USA. In Canada, Samsonite kept
the Lego license until 1986.
There are several 1960's sets (on both side of the Atlantic) that never made it
into a catalog. In Europe parts packs #271 (Policemen) and #510 (Tiles) never
made it into a catalog. In the USA it was #005 and #536.
Hope that helps,
Gary Istok

| (...) Gary, Thanks for the reply and information. I can take a picture of the box and/or contents if an admin reads this and would like to add 005 to the lugnet database. Let me know, Eric Strand (20 years ago, 13-Jun-04, to lugnet.general)

| Lugnet needs a new guide entry for the following set: 005 Discovery Set Also, Lugnet has a date of 1971 for the similar 004 set. However, I found this reference which shows 1966: (URL) Gear Set (1966) 002 Motor Pak (1966) 003 Master Mechanic Set (...) (20 years ago, 11-Jun-04, to lugnet.general)
