lost parts replacement from Lego company

First of all, I would like to say I have been out of the loop for a number of
years.  I used to follow RTL pretty regularly and even post once in a while if I
had something useful to contribute.  In the last few weeks I have been regaining
a lot of my interest in Lego and am amazed at how much stuff is availible on the
web.  By stuff I don't just mean tons of pictures of peoples collections and the
truely amazing displays that various clubs have put together.  I also mean
resources like bricklink where you can get just about anything you want if you
have the money.  The Lego companies website has really improved as well.  I
remember sitting and waiting for all the fancy java things to load and you still
couldn't order online.  Now you can do lots of stuff at their website.
Including request replacement parts for broken or lost parts.

I have been sorting through my collection and looking at some of the used sets I
got a few years ago.  The sets have missing parts.  I have actually managed to
replace some of the pieces from varioius spare parts I have in my collection but
I just don't have some of the things like the ropes with the round 1 stud plate
connecters on the end for example.

So my question is this, is it better to bother the Lego company to purchase
replacement parts or is it better to go to other sources such as bricklink?  How
readily does the Lego company replace lost parts, especially on older sets that
are not currently in production?  What experiances have people had with
replacing lost parts?  And by lost I am talking about missing parts after sale
at no fault of the Lego company, not minor production misshaps resulting in an
occasional missing piece though with the QC that Lego has on their products, I
have a hard time believing that happens too often.

Thanks for any input you can provide.
