Well this is a first of sorts for me on several levels:
It’s my first time to use FTX for a post so if this fubar’s, my apologies ahead
of time.
It’s the first (and hopefully) the last time I’ll use such a long title but I
couldn’t resist. Gold star to anyone that recognizes the reference.;)
It’s also the first time I’ve used a Technic motor, gear reduction, or fiber
optics in a MOC, and I found a great use for the new 2x2x2 Click-blocks from the
Alpha Team under water sets (they make great speakers).
So, may I formally introduce you to:
Crazy Leo and the Knights!
Their first “garage band” appearance was in Columbus, OH at the August COLTC
Tuttle Mall display:
Still, despite appearing atop the local supermarket, their performance landed
them the attention of producer Tommy Brickly. He immediately signed them to a
recording contract and set about updating their stage and light show.
The band members (l-r):
Jef Studsdown - bass, backing vocals
Johnny Brickson - lead vocals, guitars, banjo(1)
Crazy Leo - drums (whatever you do, don’t ask him to sing)
Gary “Half Stud” Offset - guitars, backing vocals
Tek’nique - guitars, backing vocals (2)
They performed this past weekend with their new stage at the Dayton GATS as part
of the COLTC display (I can’t believe I didn’t get any pictures of them in the
display.. oops.) and seemed to meet with favorable response from those
attending.

I apologize for the lower quality of the lighted images; my digital camera is
old and tired and doesn’t like it when I play with exposure settings but I think
the idea of how the fiber optics function is conveyed.
I’m extremely pleased with how everything turned out with this MOC.
The fiber optic generators are spun by a single motor running off a worm gear
for speed reduction so that both generators ‘fire’ at a more reasonable speed of
once every 1.5 to 2 seconds or so. Early gearing had them firing off way too
fast (1-2x a second) for my liking.
The last lesson was learned in the field: One motor + 2 FO generators + 3
flashing lights=too much drain for 1 9v battery. The setup devoured 3 9v’s (to
my knowledge) over the first day and a half till Mike Gallagher was cool enough
to loan me a 3ft power cable to run it directly from a train regulator. That
solved the problem once for all. Thanks Mike!

(1) No one is really sure why he plays the banjo. No one has asked, probably
because they’re afraid of his answer.
(2) Arguably the most popular member of the band and certainly the most easy on
the eyes. It’s the green hair.

| This came out when I was about 11 and I wanted it so bad. Two problems: 1. It wasn't available in India at that time 2. None of my relatives were kind enough to shell out $120 for it Fast forward 14 years, I'm now in the US, am employed and have (...) (21 years ago, 19-Dec-03, to lugnet.technic)
