Peeron has a listing of inventoried parts by color:
http://www.peeron.com/cgi-bin/invcgis/psearch?query=Smoke&limit=color2part
click on a part in that list & you'll get a listing from most to least of the
sets with that part. That should make finding specific parts, and seeing if the
part is actually made a little easier.
Of course Peeron doesn't have ~every~ set inventoried, but it's a good place to
start your research.
