Volunteer Resources Manager

Summary
FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), a Manchester, New Hampshire based nonprofit organization, seeks to recruit a Volunteer Resources Manager to assist a rapidly growing organization that aspires to transform American culture, making science, math, engineering, and technology as cool for kids as sports are today.

FIRST is best known for its nationwide annual robotics competitions in which teams of high school students, sponsored and assisted by local companies and volunteers, design, assemble, and test a robot capable of performing a specified task in competition with other teams. FIRST also runs the FIRST LEGO League, for children 9-14 years old, and FIRST Place, an innovative science and technology center, including a hands-on children’s science museum. Reporting to the Director of Operations, the Volunteer Resources Manager will work to help FIRST evolve into a highly decentralized, volunteer-driven organization.


Job Functions
The Volunteer Resources Manager will:
• Work with the Director of Operations to plan and implement volunteer management systems;
• Document and disseminate volunteer resource management best practices within the FIRST community;
• Engage and support volunteer coordinators working with FIRST programs;
• Review, revise, and maintain key volunteer position descriptions;
• Develop a marketing plan and materials for recruitment of diverse volunteers (e.g., women, and persons of color) and volunteers who can assist in low-income communities;
• Coordinate with national volunteer recruitment sources such as other nonprofit organizations, companies, and professional associations; • Provide technical assistance on FIRST processes for volunteer screening and ensure compliance with standards;
• Work with FIRST program managers and regional volunteer leaders to establish high-quality orientation and training programs for volunteers;
• Work with FIRST programs to assess and meet the support needs of volunteers and bolster volunteer motivation and retention;
• Develop standards and resources for volunteer recognition at all levels of the organization;
• Evaluate the effectiveness of volunteer management initiatives;
• Manage the internet-based volunteer recruitment, matching, and record keeping systems;
• Review and improve policies and procedures for the overall functioning of volunteer services within FIRST;
• Create and manage the FIRST national Volunteer Advisory Council and maximize volunteer engagement in organizational decision making;
• Write and manage correspondence to key volunteers;
• Train and encourage staff to integrate volunteers into program activities;
• Participate as a member of the Operations & Information Technology team in the design and implementation of business plans;
• Perform other duties as required/assigned by the Director of Operations and Executive Director.


Qualifications and Attributes
The ideal candidate will possess the following professional qualifications and personal attributes: • A strong commitment to the FIRST mission and goals; • Experience as a volunteer;
• Demonstrated management experience in a decentralized nonprofit organization relying on volunteer support (national nonprofit experience is preferred);
• Experience in volunteer recruitment, screening, training, motivation and recognition;
• An understanding of office and internet technology and the ability to utilize systems;
• A management and leadership style that is goal oriented, but flexible; that respects the capabilities and independence of staff and volunteers, but provides them with a clear sense of direction;
• An ability to effectively handle interpersonal situations, including tactfully handling feedback;
• An ability to inspire trust, organize people into a team, and motivate them to work well together in a highly decentralized environment;
• A high energy level, flexible, and self-motivated;
• Articulate, with a proven ability to write and speak well;
• Highest level of personal and professional integrity and quality standards;
• Cross-cultural sensitivity and experience working with diverse communities;
• An ability to meet the travel requirements of the position;
• BA degree or equivalent experience required.

Compensation
Compensation for the Volunteer Resources Manager includes a base salary (range $38K-$45K, commensurate with experience) and a comprehensive set of health and employee benefits.
