You think that is bad, I have been practically exploding my brain trying to
work out how the heck they injection mold the chains.
Each link is a single piece, so all the links must be molded in place. I
can't imagine that they mold the entire thing in one go (imagine how complex
and precise the mold would need to be) and the best method I can come up
with is that each alternate link is molded in the first pass, and then the
rest of the links are molded in a second pass.

I don't know - I've been trying to visualise the mold, be cant! (and I have
done injection molding during my university days!) At the VERY least it
would need to be a four part mold.

We happened to be touring a factory in Billund on a day when they were
making dark gray chains -- in fact, we brought some home, literally hot out
of the machine. That said, we have no insights into the mystery of how they
get formed except to say it was done with the same standard machine that
common bricks are made with and that it appeared to be doing the usual
steps: close, inject, open, eject and taking the usual amount of time per cycle.

If someone figures it out, we'd like to know too!
