LEGO's marketing is a bit kerflooey. I am guessing that they are trying to
target audiences by sending people catalogues that reflect their individual
choices: some buying histories get catalogue one, and other buying histories get
catalogue two.
The targeted marketing idea would be great if the buyers could be pegged into
a target zone, but targeted marketing doesn't work well when the catalogues are
going to people like you and me (and I assume others) that buy LEGO for a wide
variety of age groups. Personally, I by LEGO for the 30+ group (me), the under 2
group, and the under 6 group. One year I got a Holiday catalogue with a lot of
Duplo stuff in it, and I bought the under 6 group a lot of Duplo. Lately, I have
not seen much Duplo in the catalogues I get, so I have now idea who Duplo Bob
is. So, LEGO may be loosing some of my business because I don't know about the
Duplo Bob stuff.

Exactally. While I can appreciate trying to target your customers, I guess
what I am really looking for is a definitive source book. I mean, new LEGO
product doesnt get released just every day. In fact, it is usually just once
a year.

I want a larger, year-long sourcebook, somehing I am MUCH more likely to
keep, and keep nice, so I can refer to it all year long. Then LEGO could put
together catalog updates the size of the Mania mags, to update us on
pricing, occassional new product released off-cycle, and announcing sales
the additional 3 quarters of the year.

Doesn't that sound much more useful?

Matt

(...) Indeed! A parts catalog with every item currently produces and in each of its colors would be spectacular. An annual inventory “sourcebook” would be quintessential among AFOL. I'm hoppin’ that once Lego Direct gets fully operational in 2002 (...) (23 years ago, 4-Jul-01, to lugnet.general, lugnet.year.2002)
