Man... after being up all night at work, this is a pretty deep topic. Though
I think it would be a deep topic for me any time.  Please forgive my little
bit of rambling here, but I believe it is what allows me to answer your
question(s). LEGO has been a part of my life for 23 of my 27 years.

Because of this, it has a place in my life that not even G.I. Joe or
Transformer got to be in - and I was very fortunate to have a lot of these
later two brands as a boy. Of the three - I only have LEGO left. It's the
only one that I never once felt guilty about having around.

It is a part of my life. My one main hobby/vice. :)

I got my first LEGO set for my birthday when I was 4. Looking on Brickshelf,
I *think* it was the 113 Universal set, since it was 1977.

When I was around 6, I discovered that LEGO had come out spacemen. Now that
was a worth getting excited over! :)

I got set 483 Alpha-1 Rocket Base in 1st grade.

I have majority of its bricks, still, though they are long since scattered
through several boxes of older bricks. I use the crater plate regularly, and
the one hose that still exists. I have two of the faucets, and all of the
inverted 1x2 slopes with computer printing on them. For me it's all a point
of personal satisfaction. Call it a safety blanket, call it whatever, but
the fact that I can confidentally say that I have those pieces is like
knowing I can call up a friend that's known me basically forever and just
start talking about "old times" again.  :)

I am learning to build functonal and detailed models that I can take
pictures of, then disassemble to reuse the pieces.  I hope to one day create
scenes on my computer using my pics.  Perhaps to go as far as writing
stories and using pics of my models to illistrate them.

This was something that I had not begun to learn until last year - when I
discovered LUGNET. Everyone in .space has, by example, taught me to be
detail oriented. As a kid, I'd build a spaceship or whatever, but it
wouldn't be original; it would end up looking like someone took a Galaxy
Explorer, tore it apart and rebuilt a 6-wide rectangle with some wings
slapped on it.

I now have MOC's that have extra detail, and some that fragile because of
the amount of detailing I've put in them. I'm still finding that happy
medium between detail and functionality. But I AM learning. And I'm getting
better at it.

I use Lego to further my artistic skills.
I use Lego to satisfy my hunger to create.
I use Lego as a means to release my imagination in healthy doses.

    ...so, why do you build?

~Kirby~

I use LEGO to just be alone with my thoughts for a little while -- to relax
and de-stress(1).
I use LEGO to express my meager artistic abilities in a medium that I seem
to have some amount of talent in.
I use LEGO to dream and create something that I, myself, cannot be. But I
can think up someone who 'can'.

Why do I build?

I build because, after all this time, it's part of my life. It's what I've
done for nearly as long as I have had memories to be recalled. I don't
really know what I would do if I ever had to give it up.

I build because every time I get to use one of those older pieces, it's like
looking at a family photo in some strange way. It isn't just a piece of ABS
that could be closing in on 25 years old, now. It's part of my childhood and
many wonderful memories.

(1) While it may not be easier to find bricks in the many boxes stacked
around, most of my brick isn't sorted out as a lot of LUGNET members have
theirs. Maybe 5% is at present. For me, there is something more relaxing in
the sound of bricks cascading around in a box as I search for the piece I
want. I know "almost" exactly where a given piece will be, regardless of how
confusing my system is to anyone else. ;)
