How are the drums attached to the minifigs in this picture? Any ideas?

If you look at the drummer next to the blue girl you'll see a black string
going up his right shoulder and around the back of his neck.  I'd imagine
the string continues down his left shoulder and is trapped between the • round
2x2 and the tile that makes the drum.

I think they are rubber bands not string; one on each arm.
