How are the drums attached to the minifigs in this picture? Any ideas?

If you look at the drummer next to the blue girl you'll see a black string
going up his right shoulder and around the back of his neck.  I'd imagine
the string continues down his left shoulder and is trapped between the round
2x2 and the tile that makes the drum.
