Probably disk corruption. Try running scandisk. (It's also possible that the
files you saw were the _result_ of scandisk trying to fix said corruption.)
The files with LUGnet stuff probably were either from your web browser cache
(pre-corruption, I mean) or from your newsreader.

| I think I've figured it out, probably misnamed files from when my browser crashed, again. My messed up browser is attacking again, NICK #:^A (...) and (...) !! (...) !! (...) (24 years ago, 18-Aug-00, to lugnet.general)
