Maybe LEGO isn't really expensive.

We recently bought a house.  With the house, came a swimming pool.
Unfortunately, instructions for the pool were not included.  Neither were
all the parts.  And some of the parts were broken.[1]  So we went to the
happy pool supply store, to buy the parts needed to make our pool go.  Now,
we didn't need big pieces of equipment, like pumps or filters.  We needed
small things:  an adapter to plug the vacuum into the skimmer, and a new
coverplate for the skimmer.  These are simple molded plastic pieces, no
metal, or fancy workings, no low-tolerances or anything.  Talk about
sticker shock!  The coverplate, a D-shaped piece of plastic approx. 9"x5",
set us back $10.  The vacuum adapter, which is a short tube with one end
smaller than the other, was $4.

And I thought, as I handed over my money to the bandit behind the counter,
"These prices make LEGO look very good."

1) Sounds like some experiences I've had with LEGO on eBay.
