I don't know if you've noticed, but not only has the stud design changed,
but so has the lettering/numbering as well. I have several different sets of
'text' under the brick, including Patent Pend. raised bumps where the patent
pend has been scratched out of the mould, and different placing of the
numbers on the underside [not counting different mould/position numbers].
the newest have the part number, as well as position/mould numbers, but I'm
not sure of the order of the others/release years, other than that the
patent pend. came before it was scratched out [It'd be strange if they did
it in the reverse order]

I my oldest LEGO is from 1976 (I think) and my newest LEGO is from
yesterday. But while playing last night I noticed that I have 4
different style 2 by 4's.  All the same on the outside, but different
patterns on the inside. The oldest ones have partially split
tubes. Next
there are bricks with solid tubes, then there are bricks with solid
tubes and a small ridge running down the length of the brick. Finally,
there are the bricks with solid tubes with notched walls, and a large
ridge running accross the brick. I vaguely remember noticing design
changes when I was younger and it used to be fun to mentally catalogue
the changes. Like upside-downies (inverted roof pieces were called
upside-downies in my house) have two different molds. Anyway, how many
other stud and tube designs have there been?

Funny you should mention this. About 3 months ago I was searching for some black 2x4 bricks for a fellow builder. And I came across 11 different styles of this brick. 3 Cellulose Acetate brick varieties, and 8 ABS brick varieties. About 1/3 of these (...) (25 years ago, 1-May-00, to lugnet.general)
