Gary,

I am in awe of your buildings (pics at
<http://my.voyager.net/lar/gistok.html>).  However, I am a little
puzzled by your One Shell Plaza.  Is there another One Shell Plaza
somewhere in RL other than the one in Houston?  Our RL building
doesn't look as decorative as your LEGO version.  I like yours
better.  8-)

Thank you very much Susan,

My One Shell Plaza started as a 10 story building back in 1985 (and
finally got to its present appearance in 1988).  It kept growing
horizontally as well as vertically.  When I got more of those rare
1x4x5 yellow windows (from a 1980's Town House set), and more of the
very rare 1x6x5 large yellow windows (from the 1980's Schoolroom big
people set), I expanded the width and breadth of the building.  I
bought about 90 of the 517 Basic Sets back in the 80's for the (2)
1x2x2 and (2) 1x4x3 yellow windows.  That caused the building to get
taller and taller.  I got all those 1x6 Shell name beams, and 1x2
Shell emblems from 1970's set #149 Shell Refinery (I bought 4 of
them).  So there are no stickers on this building.

Is your 1SP still standing?

The "One Shell Plaza" name was directly copied from the original in
Houston, although I have to confess that I have yet to see a picture
of the original building.

Here are the only two pictures of Houston's One Shell Plaza that I can
find on the web:

(whole building except for lower few floors, from far away)

When I finish paying for my dog's knee surgery, I'll get a digital
camera, and then maybe I can produce a better set of pictures myself.
:-)

My version is more of a 1920's Art Deco
style building, who's shape is more than coincidentally similar to
the Empire State Building in New York City.

Unfortunately, the real 1SP is a drab, boring building.  As I said, I
like yours better.

I love Art Deco architecture.  Detroit, which is 8 miles from my
house and has some of the countrys most spectacular 1920's Art Deco
office buildings and ornate theaters, was the inspiration for my
love of Art Deco designs.

In Houston, the city fathers tear down any public buildings that are
over 50 years old...  A very few get saved.

Thanks Susan!  What really surprised me was the first picture of the top
of the real One Shell Plaza.  It looks like the windows on each floor are
made of those white LEGO 1x4x2 railing pieces that were in recent bucket
sets.  I have over 100 of these (in straight and curved), and I have been
tinkering with a new building made of these.  Naturally, since I build in
the classic scale (door = 3 bricks high), they are normal window height
for me.  Using the 4x4 quarter circle bricks in white, and some radar
dishes, I have been able to build a nice Streamlined Moderne office
building.  Moderne is the 1930's and 1940's rather plain Art Deco style
seen mostly in Gas Stations and Diners.

And speaking of railing pieces, if you check out my LEGO Museum of Art
(the first pictures on my website), you will see that 4 white curved
railing pieces and a large and small gray radar dish make a great circular
cupola.  There's one on top of each wing of the museum.  For me this was
architecturally a very satisfying design accent.

And speaking of railing pieces again, I took a bunch of those curved white
railing pieces along with some white 4x4 quarter circle bricks, and a few
of the old (1960s) white 4x4 turntables that are totally round (no square
base) for the top, and VOILA! a great copy of the Leaning Tower of Pisa.
