I recently found 4 of these in a lot of used Lego from the 70's.

If you can't tell from the scan, it's a black 1x2 brick that's
functionally equivalent to a 1x2 Technic beam.  However, on
each side there is a notch from the axle hole to the studs.

Is this an old type of beam from the era of those pre-technic
parts (e.g. red bushings) or something else?

What sets had it?

Just look at this page: (URL) has also been used in another motorcycle set (Norton Motorcycle) of the same series. Selçuk (...) (25 years ago, 10-Feb-00, to lugnet.general)
