Well I bought most of the 2000 sets I could find yesterday and today.  The
chicagoland area seems to have a complete stock if you visit a few stores.
Zany Brainy last night had:

The green episode 1 land speeder
the A-wing
the B-wing
the desert skiff with han and luke
the jar-jar type characters on the two legged things (which I passed on)
the pit droid
the battle droid (Not the ball thing, the two legged thing)
A few arctic sets
a few new castle sets
The also had 50% off shuttles, but I passed since I mail-ordered 2 from a
different zany.

That find prompted a stop by TRU on the way home which produced:
Slave 1 (or so I thought, more below)
the castle sets I didn't have yet minus the big one

Today, I got a $99 freight train and the big castle set

Sets they had that I didn't get:

the city center set with the raised road plates was there.  I couldn't bring
myself to pay $60 for town-jr.  Hopefully, there will be a service pack for the
raised road plates.

Also passed on the big arctic set in a feeble attempt to control the spending.
:)

Sets that were noticeably absent (not sure if they're 4/1, 7/1, ot just not
here):

The falcon
The soccer sets (ready to order a case of the tour busses)
The dinos
THe model team star wars

I got home and immediatly opened slave 1 only to discover that a dispicable
being bought it, removed the pieces, refilled it with random dirty used lego,
and returned it.  It was the only one they had.  Whoever did this carefully
removed the tape because the original tape looked intact.

So I built the pit droid.  I like this one a lot.  I really like the colors and
the new technic pieces.  (well, new to me)

I also built the castle jousting set.  The best piece here is the stained glass
window piece.  Also, the new king minifig head (king leo) looks great with a
grey beard.  It reminds me of sean connery as king arthur.  The barding (I
think that's the right word, my daughter calls it a horse-dress) is also very
nice.  This line looks great.  I'd say the old castle theme is back.  Perhaps
not as good as the pre-royal knights stuff, but easily as good as royal knights
if not better and hugely better than fright-blight.  I especially like the lion
head bricks.

Has anyone else noticed how the Bull emblem on the barbarian's shields looks
like the chicago bulls?

The arctic sets are also great.  The instructions have black and while (more
like brown) old pictures of arctic expeditions.  Very cool.  I'll have to
arm-wrestle my four year old for the polar bear.  It's an excellent theme,
especially the parkas and the backpack piece.  The snow-shoes are also perfect.
Not sure about the transparent insects.  The trans-blue spider looks cool.

I havn't opened the large castle set yet.  Female minifig fans will be happy to
note that there's a female knight in the set in addition to the princess.  It
also looks like she has... form-fitting armor.  :-O  Very cool.  They're also
making better use of the face masks than in royal knights.  I'll report on the
castle tomorrow.

All-in-all, I'm very happy with the 2000 sets.  It sounds like lego listened at
least a little.  There also seems to be a new duplo theme.  I think it's Little
Forest Friends.  It looks like Ziggy meets the domesticated transparent insects
in the forest.  I'm sure my kids will love it.  Lots of building ahead.
