Thanks for the vote of confidence Lindsay! Even though I have been building Gothic
Cathedrals since 1983, I haven't really been doing rose windows. One reason in the
past was when you use 1x5x4 half arches and their inverse counterparts (with clear
bricks as the window) it came out looking more like an "oculus" window which is a
circle shaped window with glass. The effect was not exactly a "rose" window.
But Joe Garlicki had some real innovations with Bar Tracery for Gothic Windows,
which I am incorporating in my new Cathedral's Lancet Windows (tall windows with
pointed tops) of different sizes (THANKS JOE!). I haven't yet tried to do a Rose
Window with this bar tracery, but I imagine the effect will be much better than an
all glass window.
Here's Joe Garlicki's EXCELLENT website on Bar Tracery, a must for building great
Gothic Windows:
http://www.pitt.edu/~jlgst56/lego/gothic/tracery.html
But there are a few drawbacks to making Rose Windows (if done properly). One
problem is most people don't have a lot of 1x1 and 1x2 clear plates, which is what
you would need to do it. The other problem is the 1x4x5 half arches and their
inverse arches are not sufficiently available in the same colors. The inverse half
arch is commonly available in red, but the regular red 1/2 arch is pretty scarce (I
only have 5 complete sets in my collection). I think someone used grey tops and red
bottoms for their rose window. I don't like the 2 color rose window frame, since I
am a purist, but it's a case of not enough supply of the right arches. Using sloped
bricks and inverse sloped bricks to try to build the frame for the rose window is
also not very satisfying.
Unfortunately I am already using all 5 pair of my red half arches in my new
Cathedral (red is a common color for the inverse half arch), so I didn't yet try to
build a rose window. You will definitely need a lot of small plates in clear (which
I have) and whatever other color your cathedral is for the bar tracery between the
glas in your rose. The top of the window in Joe's bar tracery windows could be the
inspiration for building a decent rose window.
Also, even though half arches and their inverses are commonly available in grey,
black or brown, I'm not sure if the same color for both arch types are readily
available (since I'm not really into Castle/Forestmen/Ninja sets).
Hope that helps,
Gary Istok
