Can someone explain the whole LEGO ruler for The Pirate Game thing to • me?

The game uses inches for things like range, distance, etc.

4 studs = 1 "inch" more or less... Declared to be exactly equal because • that
makes it more fun...

So you make up a "stick" of 2x4 bricks in alternating colors (using • plates on
top and bottom of the bricks, or whatever you like to keep it all • locked
together) and measure with that.

So, what is the appeal other than it's LEGO? Or is that the appeal?

Everything else in the game is made out of LEGO. It's not really a matter • of
"appeal". one "inch" is *by definition* 4 studs. So you can't use a • regular
ruler even if you wanted to, the inches on it are the wrong size. But why • would
you want to?

The game rules were actually written to use real inches. I decided to use
LEGO inches (4 studs) the first time I ran the game (at BrickFest 2000), in
part because I forgot to bring tape measures, but also because it seemed
like a cool idea.
