A couple of years ago, I got irritated by a stack of magazines laying around the house and decided to throw together a quick little holder for them using some DUPLO bricks. Later on my mother-in-law spotted it and asked if I would build her one. Well, things being what they are I never got around to it.

But then as I was preparing for the holiday shopping season and already dreading the prospect of selecting a gift for my impossible-to-shop-for M.i.L., I remembered that old request to build her a rack for her magazines.

So, since everyone loves homemade gifts for Christmas, I decided to take a crack at building her one and determined that I would make it a little more decorative than my basic DUPLO one.

After going through a couple of different designs, this is what I ended up with:

I didn’t try to glue it together because I want to get approval from the giftee. If she likes it, I’ll then work on sticking it together permanently. I’m thinking about just glueing the top and bottom sections so that I could always come back and redo the designs in the middle later if she gets tired of this one or wants another color scheme.

I also went to the bookstore and bought an assortment of periodicals to fill up the rack - I figure that way when she opens the gift there won’t be this extended period of the whole family sitting there uncomfortably while she studies it and turns it over and upside down and says things like, “this is really nice” and basically keeps us in nerve-racking suspense for neverending minutes before she finally breaks down and asks what it’s supposed to be. With the mags already in place hopefully she’ll figure it out a little quicker.

Once the BrickShelf folder has been moderated, you can see the rest of the pictures here:

Merry Christmas to Everyone!
