Does water seem to have any negative effects on LEGO bricks?  I meant to ask

an issue with the snowglobes, but do the pieces become brittle after a
while?

Bryan,
Since we all love our bricks dearly, these are not stupid questions.

I might be asking stupid questions, but I would have thought that water
would have some adverse affects.

First, depending on how much chlorine, you may get some bleaching

Also, if there are mineral deposits, they could cause buildup.
(test it this way- fill a clear plastic something that you can throw away full
of tap water. Leave the top off and wait until all the water evaporates. You
can speed this up if you have a pyrex contain you don't mind scrubbing by
boiling the water off on your stovetop. If there is a heavy buildup of crud on
the bottom of your container (red, white, maybe yellow) you have minerals that
will build up on your bricks.

One more thing. Water erodes. If you run a fountain long enough (esp. with
minerals in the water, the bricks will begin to round off at the corners.
