BricksWest was a long trip for me, I live in upstate NY. I attended because my primary interest was in meeting other AFOLs and see their work first hand. (...) The time expended is certainly a factor, but it's actually more a factor of expectations. When I do a train show, I usually commit a whole weekend to it. (...) I don't think the point is the amount expended, the point is the time allocation. Attending a con is a significant time investment as well as expense. (...) Two 4-hour windows of public display is pretty minor, all things considered. A much bigger "turn-off" for me is the (seemingly) rigid shutdown time - but I freely admit that's a personal bias stemming from experience with gaming and SF cons. (...) (...) [...] (...) I wouldn't pay $150/night for a hotel room in any case. At BricksWest we stayed at a campground the first two nights and at Motel 6 the third.
