All AFOLs aren't created equal. I'm an AFOL who's trying to keep to a
budget and manage my personal free time between my family and my bricks. If
I have to buy three 10020s so I can build a proper B-unit (i.e. three gray
port holes per side like Brad Justus described at BricksWest 2002) it means
I probably can't afford some other set or sets in it's place. If I'm going
to dedicate the time I don't share with my non-LEGO wife to my hobby I'd
rather spend it building than surfing around through Bricklink shops trying
to find the right pieces to do it without having to buy three 10020s and/or
spend a fortune. Either way, if LEGO offered a kit I'd buy it in an
instant. While many of the brilliant, creative, and inspiring AFOLs who
post to LUGNET are the type who buy ten copies of every set in a theme and
have 800,000 pieces in their Bricklink shops, some of us mere mortal AFOLs
don't have the luxury of being able to real-build any MOC we can conceive.
Believe me I've browsed Jake's BI portal (and James Mathis's brickshelf
pages!) many times and found tons of MOCs I'd love to build but despite my
significant collection of sets (typically only one of each) I doubt I have
the right pieces to build most of those MOCs I desire. I've done the
exercise using Peeron and an LDraw parts list only to be repeatedly
frustrated that I just don't have the right number or color of key elements
that define the MOC. It's a painstaking process and once again it's time
away from my family that if I'm going to dedicate to LEGO, I'd rather be
building. Maybe I'm in the minority among AFOLs but if LEGO Direct is going
to consider the AFOL demographic when deciding a product (assuming they do
at all) I want it to be known that we don't all have the same resources.
Regards,
Paul
PS: I'm not trying to start a big B-unit debate again. Obviously, I agree
that if LEGO Direct has to *choose* between a B-unit accessory pack or a
brand new trains-themed set I'd also choose the new trains-themed set. But
if they don't have to choose then I think the demand will be there among
others like me.
