Hello Brickfest Planners,
While registering for BrickFest2002, I came across a line stating that no
child under 16 will be permitted at Brickfest without the supervision of a
parent/legal guardian at all times.
I have to admit I can see the point in this. I myself being a FOL do not
want children running around touching my models, and destroying the hard
work of others. But I also must admit that I am not a legal adult yet, nor
am I 16 yet. I am 14 years old. Now, please don't let that number
determine my ability to act in a mature or professional manner. As any
MICHLUG member can tell you I act on a level a bit higher than most kids of
my age group (hopefully :P, and I hate to be advertising myself as well).
That is to say I am not the one to run around going bonkers seeing all that
LEGO and otherwise disrupting the events held at Brickfest. I am, in fact,
and active member in MICHLUG, and in no way did my parents have anything to
do with it, and I feel that by attending BrickFest I might have some little
shred of something to contribute to the extremely enjoyable event that is
Brickfest, which I myself have never attended.
I also have to admit that I see the part of the rule that states I can
attend but only with an adult. Personally, I think that line was created
for the purpose that if a AFOL parent wishes to bring his less than 16 year
old child to Brickfest, he/she must supervise the child at all times--that
situation is the complete opposite of what I am in. As any of you AFOLs
probably remember, your parents were probably not to enthusiastic about LEGO
as you were; nor did you have LUGNET to increase your involvement in the
hobby--that is the case with my parents. For starters, they got me into a
hobby where I am buying things off of Bricklink, and building models that
take up their whole living room. Now I wish of them to drive me to
Washington D.C. and make them attend Brickfest (which they have no interest
in doing so). So rather than dragging them along all day, I would rather
just go on my own (of course, using proper AFOL mannerisms).
Overall, I guess it boils down to this. I am 14 years of age; my parents do
not want to drive out to Washington, D.C. to get me to Brickfest and have to
attend it with me. Is there any way that there can be an exception in the
rules for me? It seems that a lot of MICHLUG is going and I would like to
be there to help contribute to that delegation from Michigan.
And I actually have content to show; it is not like I just want to attend
for the heck of it. There are a few questions regarding Terragen (a program
used with POV-Ray and LEGO modeling) that I wish to clear up with some of
the attendees, and I have several Episode 2 models I wish to display.
So would you please consider my case? I know about that no exceptions
philosophy that National Parks have, If we made an exception for one
person, then we would have to start making exceptions for everybody, but
not to use a pun intentionally, I believe my case is an exceptional one,
compared to the other cases out there.
Thank you for your time,
Kai Brodersen

| To All Concerned, I am sorry I did not respond sooner to this, I am rather busy as of late. Having been a part of MichLUG / MichLTC since its inception over a year ago, and being the Membership Chair of our club, I like to say that Kai has been a (...)
