I had a couple of ideas I was trying to push to "the powers that be"
One would be a simple, undisclosed challenge. For example, build a bot
to find 3 black circles on a white table.
The idea being that it could be done with just the basic bricks in the
mindstorms box in just a few hours and people could build and solve the
problem at the fest (it would have to be sufficiently simple challenge
that it wouldn't take more than a couple hours to build a bot). This
would let non-mindstorms people see how a problem may be solved..
especially if points were given for creative solution of the problem :-)
Another Idea is taken from one of those robot wars shows. Everyone
builds a bot, but we only get a rough idea of the challenge (don't fall
off a table, be able to find a black line on a white sheet, avoid
walls). We can build a bot with some basic programming, then be given a
few hours to make adjustments at the fest once we know what the real
challenge is (perhaps navigate a bridge between two tables (after
finding it!) or something similar).
In both cases, I like the idea of showing off the construction or tuning
side to the fest. Perhaps even couple the construction part with some
demos or other draws to the mindstorms room (each team give a brief on
how they are solving the problem?). This came from taking to the
mindstorms programming guy. I'd love to see him write a solution rather
than just talk about the language... tho the solution would have to be
sufficiently simple that he could lead us through it and so he wouldn't
be distracted by the challenge itself...
just a thought :-)
