Hi Todd -
I *strongly* suggest pre-screening entries for quality and entertainment
value -- whether you do it, or have a panel of judges do it.

While the humor category was excellent at BricksWest, I know from the
feedback I got from many attendees that the general animation section wasn't
as well accepted.

I suggest screening entries for the following:

- Plot: check to see one even exists, and is easy to follow. While most
films showcased excellent animation, some of them left the audience
wondering 'what's the point?' Animating is one thing, being able to tell a
story is another. I know this puts whoever makes this decision in a tricky
spot. It seems to me though that if festival organizers aren't subjective in
weeding out low quality entries, the audience will suffer.

- Conciseness (is that a word?): Some of the entries in general animation
drug on for quite a while, and were rather flat. I know this bothered more
than just me. Perhaps imposing a time limit of 5 mins or less on films would
be good. This would also allow for more entries to be seen.

- Relevant Material for General Audiences: One of the entries at BricksWest
included random inside jokes the vast majority of LEGO fans didn't get. To
most I sat with, that entry was rather pointless because of that.

I don't mean to be harsh on the hard work some people put into animations.
But, when people are spending time at an event to view others' work, it
would be courteous to them to show only good quality material, and not
everything submitted. I really enjoy a lot of LEGO animations I've seen, but
there are some I definitely don't like. I know I'm not alone in this, based
on my experience at BricksWest.

So, in short, I'd love to see animation festivals continue showing good
short films, since I want to see them. But, I do hope more attention is paid
to the quality of submissions that are actually shown at events, for the
audience's sake.

I appreciate all of the hard work you have done and are doing to deliver
animation festivals to the community at events!!

-Tim

Here it is, the call for ideas and restrictions.

There will be a one week time limit, and then I will ask the moderators to
close discussion on this topic.

I am interested in any idea you might have for an animation competition to be
held at BrickFest 2003.

At the end of the week I will post here and on LUGNET the competition rules and
contest parameters.

All ideas will be considered.

Rules are also being considered and if you have any suggestions for rules
concerning the competition such as format and other issues, let the ideas flow
here.

The deadline is already set in stone, and that date is July 14th. If is not in
my hands on the 14th, then it will not be in the competition.
