Hi All,
I also wanted to take a moment and join the shorus of people posting their
reactions and thoughts on BF2K+2. I went down to Virginia fully expecting to
have a wonderful time, and I was not in the least disappointed. From start to
finish, beginning to end, it was a tremendous experience. I was disappointed
at not being able to go last year, and spent the past 12 months building up
anticipation for this year's event. Every moment of the three days surpassed
even these high standards!
Firstly, a special thanks to all of the people who sweated, cursed,
organized, and worked to make the event such a stark raving success.
Obviously, Chtristina deserves recognition for running around like a lunatic
for 3 days straight, as well as getting up there and running the show from the
forefront. Denise did a great job handling a dozen administrative issues at
any given time, and Kevin did wonderfully with webcams, maxifig cams, backpack
cams, and more. Stephen was always running around as well, jumping from the
space room to the registration area and back. In addition, I know that people
like Abe and Rich were responsible for work behind the scenes and in
preparation for the event. Thank you all!
Secondly, the people who organized the rooms themselves deserve a great deal of
credit. My understanding is that John Barnes really made the Mindstorms room
from scratch, such that it was one of the undeniable hits of the event this
year. Without his hard work and organization, Fred might ne4ver have reached
celebrity status ...
Similarly, Tom Cook did a tremendous job with the train/town room. In addition
to being flexible and corrdinated during the setup, he also went above and
beyond the call of duty with respect to train/town judging. Although it wasn't
formally announced anywhere, Tom organized a panel of judges to walk through
the train/town rooms and judge the MOCs using National Model Railroading
Association categories and scoring criteria, and then presented awards to the
winners. This was a really great addition, in that I wasn't even aware that
there *were* official categories and scoring criteria.
Everybody should also give Todd Thuma a round of applause - although he was
entertainingly self-deprecating when it came to the technical difficulties in
showing the Brickly Animations, those who stayed through really had the
opportunity to witness some great pieces. Kudos to Todd for sticking to it and
making sure we all saw everything there was to offer.
Sadly, I didn't get to meet everybody there. In fact, I'm guessing that in a
lineup I'd only be able to pick out maybe 25% of the attendees, which is a real
shame - I really enjoyed speaking with everyone I did meet, and I found the
wide variety of personalities, perspectives, humor, support, and enthusiasm
inspiring. I apologize to anybody that I didn't get the chance to speak with -
hopefully, next year (at the latest)? Finally, it was great seeing familiar
faces again.
There were, as you can see from the ongoing Brickshelf postings, amazing MOCs
on display. I just started listing a whole bunch of MOCs that I considered
absolutely stellar, and then found the list taking up a huge amount of space
and basically becoming a categorized inventory of all the MOCs in each room.
Instead, I'll just offer my blanket congratulations to everyone who brought
something to show - thanks for the inspirations and mind-blowing constructions.
If anybody finds themselves up in the Boston area, make sure to drop us (NELUG)
a line - we're always willing to organize an inpromptu meeting or Brikwars game
to accomodate a visiting AFOL in the area.
Thanks to everyone for everything!
Only 360 more days ...
