Well what more is there to say?

Even if my body (sleep, food, beer) has recovered from the weekend, my mind is
still a beautiful colorful carnival of images of MOCs bricks and people that
will take a long time to fade. And when my mind settles hopefully I will have
some great ideas left over for building more stuff. Like Felix (great MC) said
on Friday, we all benefit from BrikFest as builders, and the quality of building
over the last five years has improved almost beyond comprehension.

I had the pleasure of coordinating the Castle Room this year, which was a lot of
work and a lot of fun. Running a theme room is a lot more than just telling
people where to put their MOCs, and it was great to have so much help from so
many people on the less than thrilling necessities of moving tables and chairs,
putting up that weird table skirting, and the like. So thanks to all who helped
out!

I'm not sure how good I'll be at remembering names, so if we met, feel free to
send me a little greeting so I can link you to your screen names. I won't try to
name all of you who I met, because I know I'll forget some, but I'd like to take
time to thank Lenny Hoffman, Marc Nelson Jr. and Ben Ellerman for their help
with the 3CS display. Thanks also to all those of you who took pics of stuff,
immortalizing these great MOCs, especially to Phillip Thorne who seemed to be
running around with a camera all Fest long and went about his work dilligently
with an air of quiet professionalism.

The Castle Room was a HUGE success! Thanks to all who came along and contributed
with MOCs and their fine company! The 3CS display was I believe the largest ever
assembled and seemed also one of the most impressive! We began talking about the
future of the 3CS concept, and while I'm not sure we really finished, we planted
the seed for some great ideas. So let's keep it going!

Thanks also to all those of you who attended my talk on Large Scale Castle
Building. I wasn't sure how many to expect, but was quite flattered to have so
many eager people show up - and I hope I may have planted some new ideas here
and there.

Connected to my biggish castle was an interactive siege display where AFOLs, and
later the public, got to vote on the outcome. This proved to be a great way to
introduce some fluidity and interactivity to the Castle Room. There are many
ideas for continuing this theme - the key being a display that changes in some
way. Next year perhaps there will be wargaming or something of that nature?
Thanks to all who voted!

Thanks also to all those who took pictures. Being both digitally challenged and
pretty busy this past weekend, I didn't get to take any pix of Falconsgate
Castle myself, so it is great to see some pic of my baby begin to seep out
online.

There was just a whole mass of awesome stuff being shown, and I think equally
importantly lots of social interaction and talking betwen AFOLs both within and
between the various themes. We can do wonders with the internet now, but it is
in the face to face interaction that communities get built and how building
ideas get exchanged the very best.

I've seen some "which is better?" comparisons being made between the CCC display
and the Space Moonbase, and for the record as Castle Room Coordinator, I'd just
like to say that I thought they were BOTH outstanding. I would have loved to
have more time to look at other rooms. If anything, I felt that this BrikFest
was the first one (though I missed last year's) where builders within different
themes began talking to one another and analysing what makes building within
different themes challenging in different ways. If you only build within one
theme you are unlikely to engage in much online interaction with builders in
another theme, but once you are all chugging beers together or visiting one
another's theme rooms you realize how much you're misisng out on. I'm hoping to
branch out into other themes, as well as continuing with the castle theme for
next year.

Some of the most memorable quotes from this past weekend come from the Sunday
public expo which was a great success:

Young boy on Sunday looking at new gray brick: "That looks like Megablocks"

Young Girl looking at my castle: "Where's the DUNGEON!?!?!"

Young Girl looking at my sige display: "What is going to happen to all the women
and children?"

Older man asking me about my castle: "Do you get paid for this?"

Thanks all - Most of all of course Christina H and Joe M.

I'm already looking forward to next year!

thanks all!

Magnus

Hey Mag. I think both castle and space were great. Comparing the two is like doin the same with apples n oranges. However its the strenths of the two combined that make a rockin "fruit bowl." I'd have to say that it defintely not uncommon to see (...) (20 years ago, 21-Aug-04, to lugnet.events)
