How many RCX's and what software do you need to control the Vending Machine
requiring 4 sensor input ports and 5 output ports at Brickshelf's
http://library.brickshelf.com/scans/9000/9701/9701-2-01.html?

Would it require RCX to RCX or Scout communication, e.g., Robolab mail?

Brickshelf recently added building instructions for this and other good
models in #9701 Control Lab Building Set at
http://library.brickshelf.com/scans/9000/9701/.
Lugnet describes it at http://guide.lugnet.com/set/9701.

The 7 models include:  industrial robotic arm, green house, dynamometer,
joy-stick operated wheelchair, vending machine, scanner, and conveyor.

Designed for the old high speed 9V motor #5114 described at
http://guide.lugnet.com/set/5114 and the #9751 serial interface pictured at
http://library.brickshelf.com/scans/9000/9701/9701-2-12.html, it looks
easily adaptable to multiple RCX's and Mindstorms sensors.
Using the newer and slower gear reduced 9V motor #5225
http://guide.lugnet.com/set/5225 that comes with Mindstorms sets might
require substantial redesign of the drive trains and motor mounts.

Some of the parts used in the various models include:
motor 9V #5114 x 2
rotation sensor x 2
light sensor x 1
touch sensor x 1
temperature sensor x 1
lamp x 3
turntable large x 1
conveyor belt links

If you have these parts, an RCX, and RCX software (RIS, Robolab, NQC, ect),
then you can easily build and control the models that do not use more than
3+3 ports.

If you need these parts, then go to Pitsco
http://www.pitsco-legodacta.com/intro.htm or http://www.pldstore.com/ for
the following:

1.  Control Lab Building Set #9701 $275 US with 527 pieces, e.g., early
Technic parts, stud beams, turntable, motors, lamps, and sensors.  This set
does not include an RCX or Mindstorms software,   This set does not include
the 16 port interface #9751, software #9705, etc that come together in set
#970943 for $715 US or separately.

2.  Robolab 2.5 software #900054 $59 US that can control the serial
interface #9751 $270 US (+ $31 cable) or your existing RCX's that you can
program to control the models.

3.  Other parts separately, e.g., the motors, sensors, lamps, turntable, and
conveyor links.
