I have been following the discussion on RTL about re-issuing older
sets.  I know this topic comes up often on RTL and I thought I might add
what I think would be a new angle on it.  Lego is unlikely to reissue
sets for myriad reasons that have all been discussed at length
(reconfiguring molds, piece productions, lack of enthusiasm in the
mainstream market, etc.).  BUT, what if Lego were to come out with "meta
sets" aimed at the collector's market.  These sets would include a CD
with all the building instructions for a particular era's/theme's models
(e.g. LEGOLAND TOWN 1978-1985).  They would also come with about
3000-5000 pieces that were used during that period.  Lots of specialty
parts and a few basic bricks.  The idea would be that you could recreate
any ONE of the sets included in that range (possibly 2 or 3 depending on
which parts they used) with this "meta set".  If you wanted, you could
buy several meta-sets to create more of the classic models in that
range.

I think this idea has several advantages:

* It could be implemented in stages (first come out with a 80s TOWn
meta-set and then release others)
* It would be an expensive set (~$250-$500 depending on coverage), but
collectors would buy multiple copies
* It would be sold directly from Lego, thereby not affecting current
retail space/plans
* It would be the ultimate "parts-pack."

What do you guys think?

I would buy 2 or 3 just for parts. But, as shown in a recent thread either here on on RTL, it could effect what is considered to be a *real* set, ei, buying the galxy explorer in '79. People could buy the "meta" set and then build the explorer, then (...) (26 years ago, 15-Dec-98, to lugnet.general, lugnet.dear-lego)
